Ring in the New Year with the Surrender Novena

Surrender to Jesus all of your problems, stresses, worries, fears, and anything else weighing you down. The Surrender Novena is a popular devotion that many Catholics participate in annually as a way to begin anew with the coming of a brand new year.

As the new year approaches, many of us think about resolutions and ways we can improve our lives. But lasting change begins from within. This year, start the year off with a powerful spiritual practice – the Surrender Novena.

The Surrender Novena is a 9-day Catholic prayer focused on letting go and giving control to God. It was created by the priest Don Dolindo Ruotolo in the 1940s, but the prayers are just as relevant today. This novena is a beautiful way to enter the new year with open hands and an open heart.

Each day, you surrender a different intention: fears, doubts, problems, challenges, relationships, health, finances, etc. You release your tight grip on what you think should happen, in order to accept God’s greater plan for your life. As the novena explains, “You take care of it. I trust you, I rely on you, I abandon myself to you, certain of your mercy.”

Releasing control requires humility and faith. But it lifts the burden we carry when we think everything depends on us alone. This letting go process creates space for clarity, guidance, and breakthroughs to enter into our lives.

Starting the year surrendered to God also sets the tone of openness and connection with the divine. Rather than charging into the new year with our plans, we begin from a place of prayer and listening. We let divine inspiration set our compass, rather than our ego or conditioned thinking.

As we surrender, we gain the inward freedom and peace that comes from detachment. We acknowledge that God’s timing and ways are beyond our limited human understanding. But his infinite love is always guiding our path.

This new year, give yourself the gift of the Surrender Novena. Let go of what no longer serves and open yourself to new possibilities. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
