CATHOLIC BIBLE STUDY READING & QUESTIONS

Catholic Bible Study Summary- Genesis 22:1-19
“The Sacrifice of the Son”

In Genesis 22:1-19, God tests Abraham’s faith by commanding him to sacrifice his son Isaac as a burnt offering. Early the next morning, Abraham takes Isaac and two servants to the place God designated. On the third day of travel, Abraham sees the place in the distance and tells the servants to wait while he and Isaac go to worship. Abraham places the wood for the burnt offering on Isaac and takes the fire and knife. As they are walking, Isaac asks where the lamb is for the offering. Abraham responds that God will provide the lamb.

When they arrive at the place, Abraham builds an altar, arranges the wood, binds Isaac, and lays him on the altar. Just as Abraham raises the knife to kill Isaac, an angel of the Lord calls out to stop him. The angel says that now he knows Abraham fears God because he did not withhold his only son. Abraham sees a ram caught in a thicket and sacrifices it as a burnt offering instead of Isaac.

The angel calls out again, saying that because Abraham obeyed God’s command, he will be blessed with numerous descendants. Abraham names the place “The Lord Will Provide” and returns to his servants. After these events, news comes to Abraham that his brother Nahor has fathered eight sons, showing that God’s promise of many descendants is being fulfilled.

Reflection Questions

  1. Considering what we know about Abraham, what conflicting emotions might he have had as he obeyed God’s commands?
  2.  Do you think that Abraham’s replies to his son’s questions about the holocaust were prepared ahead of time? Why or why not?
  3. Based on the interaction of Abraham and Isaac during their journey, what can you conclude about their relationship?
  4. Compare the details of the sacrifice of Isaac with Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross in the New Testament.
  5. Compare your level of faith to Abraham’s. How strong is your trust in God during the trials that you have faced (or are facing) in your life?
